At the beginning of her songwriting career, Buffy Sainte-Marie wrote the song “Universal Soldier,” that quickly became an anthem for the peace movement in the 1960’s. Donovan had a hit with it in 1965. From then it was recorded by hundreds of artists in many different languages. It continues to be sung by young musicians today. The song embraces the vision of Gandhi and makes a striking statement about personal responsibility.
In this video from 1996, Buffy first describes her experience writing the song and what it means, then performs it herself.
